Colostrum and Jaundice

Colostrum is the first milk a mother produces in the early days of breastfeeding. This special milk is low in fat, and high in carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies to help keep a baby healthy. It is extremely easy to digest, and is therefore the perfect first food for babies. It is low in volume but high in concentrated nutrition for the newborn. Colostrum has a laxative effect on the baby, helping him pass his early stools, which aids in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice.

Bilirubin is a chemical breakdown product of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a substance in red blood cells that grabs onto oxygen in the lungs and carries it to the tissues in the body where it releases it. When red blood cells wear out they are trapped in the spleen and destroyed, releasing bilirubin into the blood. The liver takes the bilirubin out of the blood which it then excretes  through the bile duct into the intestine.

If bilirubin is not properly processed by the spleen and liver, a condition known as jaundice can develop at any age. This is indicated by dark urine, pale stool, and a yellowish skin color. Thus the colostrum which a newborn receives from its mother's first nursing is crucial in helping to give its skin that healthy pinkish glow.

Colostrum has an especially important role to play in the baby's gastrointestinal tract. A newborn's intestines are very permeable. Colostrum seals the holes by "painting" the gastrointestinal tract with a protective barrier.
