Got Candida? You’re not alone

Candida albicans is a type of fungus that is found normally on your skin and in the mucous membranes of the mouth, rectum, and vagina. The fungus can travel through your bloodstream and cause problems in your throat, intestines, and the valves of your heart.

While Candida albicans occurs naturally in your body, it can become infectious when there is some change within your body that promotes out of control growth of the fungus.

The result is a condition called “candidiasis moniliasis” or more commonly, a “yeast” infection. When it affects the mucous membranes in your mouth, it is called “thrush.” Diaper rash in infants is another form of yeast infection as is “paronychia”, which is a yeast infection that can occur around your finger and toe nails.

While most of these conditions are not serious or life-threatening, a candida infection in your bloodstream can travel to your organs, resulting in a serious infection.

Why infections like Candida are increasing

Most of the time Candida albicans is harmless. In fact, a study conducted by Rice University has shown that about 70% of the population have it in their gut. However, it becomes a real problem when something changes the balance between the fungus and the beneficial microorganisms found in your gut.

One reason that Candida infections are on the rise is connected to diet. In today’s fast-paced society, more and more people are eating processed foods which contain a lot of sugar and high fructose corn syrup. Candida is dependent on these organic compounds to grow and reproduce.

Long term periods of stress can also contribute to changes in your body which make it optimal for a yeast infection -- a rise in blood sugar levels and a weakening of your immune system.

Another common cause of candida infections is the use antibiotics which, while working to destroy harmful bacteria, can also result in the destruction of beneficial bacteria, especially in your digestive system, which cause the fungus to multiply.
