What's the problem with Candida?

We all know a yeast infection is a problem, but did you know that it is one of the most common problems for women? According to recent statistics, “up to 75 percent of all American women”[1] will contract a yeast infection at least once in their lives. Considering these numbers, it’s time we paid attention to how serious yeast infections are.

A yeast infection is triggered by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, also known as candidiasis.  Classified as a single-cell fungus, Candida is a natural, harmless part of your body, but can become harmful when its population gets out of control. As a result, a yeast infection is set off with all of its unpleasant symptoms.

Though rarely life threatening, Candida overgrowth should give you concern. Candida albicans are an indicator for you overall health. When your Candida populations are out of whack, your immune system including your well-being is compromised. Strive to optimize your health by bringing a balance to your intestinal tract and keeping those Candida numbers in check.

Signs you may have a problem with Candida, too

You may be wondering, what are the signs to you’ve got problems with Candida? Instead of waiting for that dreaded yeast infection to be triggered, look for these warning signs:

  • Mood disorders. As science explores the neural pathways between the brain and intestinal tract, there is no doubt that the two are connected. If you’ve got an overgrowth of bad flora attacking your gut, you are more susceptible to dramatic mood swings as well as anxiety, irritability and depression.
  • Fatigue. If you’re always tired without a clear cause or suffer from long-lasting headaches and brain fog, then you might be experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome. Chronic fatigue is often one of the first symptoms identified for Candida overgrowth.
  • Stomach issues. If there is something wrong with you gut flora, your stomach is the first one to notice. Pay attention to symptoms such as bloating, gas and either diarrhea or constipation. If any or a combination of those are present, you should check to see if Candida is the cause.
  • Sinus infections. Candida isn’t limited to the intestinal tract and, when numbers get out of hand, it will wreak havoc on the sinuses by causing sore throat, allergies and congestion.
  • UTIs. As you know, Candida overgrowth in the vaginal area will lead to vaginal yeast infections. Maybe less known is the fact that urinary tract infections can also be caused by Candida. If you experience either one or both, check and see if Candida albicans is the problem.
